Spectral Induced Polarization of Carbonates during Exposure to Reactive Gases under Reservoir Conditions (part II)
Final Report Abstract
The project focused on a comprehensive understanding of carbonatic rocks subject to CO2 under shallow-aquifer and reservoir conditions by means of laboratory experiments and modelling. The work has been motivated by geotechnologies, particularly the storage of reactive gases like CO2, H2, SO2, and CH4 in deep underground reservoirs, where a main concern is to ensure public safety through effective monitoring methods. The project successfully conducted the planned laboratory experiments under reservoir conditions as main task, leading to significant progress in understanding complex electrical conductivity not only of carbonate rocks under CO2 and reservoir conditions. This involved the development of novel methodologies for determining electrical and structural properties of carbonate rock formations and the validation of a petrophysical model. The project also made notable contributions to theoretical and numerical developments, including computational methodologies and numerical simulations, which broaden the project's impact. A field campaign in central Nepal provided valuable insights for real applications, in addition to further investigations into the transferability to process engineering issues. Despite challenges such as experimental difficulties and disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the project achieved its objectives and paved the way for future research in digital rock physics and field applications also through journal and conference papers. Overall, the project significantly advanced our understanding in the field of rocks subject to CO2 and laid the groundwork for further scientific endeavors.
