The Rights-Based Approach to Social Health Protection: Participation and Accountability in African and Asian Health Systems

This project aims at comparing the different legal mechanisms which are used to implement the rights-based approach-principles "participation" and "accountability" in the context of health sector reforms in South-/Southeast-Asia and Sub-Saharan-Africa. On the basis of a comparative legal analysis of the participation regime and relevant organizational regulations of two sample countries (Ghana and Indonesia) we will look for cross-national similarities and differences regarding the implementation of these mechanisms. Moreover it will be considered whether the findings of this legal comparison can also be fruitful for health system reform processes in other developing or newly industrializing countries.
