Dynamics in quantum metrology

Subject Area Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas

Term from 2016 to 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 312936166

The projet has three main objectives: Firstly, we want to examine the influence of the dynamics of measurements in quantum metrology. In particular, we want to investigate, how the best possible sensitivity scales with measurement time in different scenarios ranging from integrable dynamics, over dynamics with a mixed classical phase space, up to chaotic dynamics. We would like to understand in detail whether the dynamics aspect can lead to a "quantum enhancement" compared to classical sensors, both for driven and holonomic quantum sensors, and if so, to what extent the quantum enhancement allows one to escape from the decoherence dilemma that plagues so far existing quantum enhanced sensors. Secondly, we would like to develop a new quantifier for the best possible sensitivity that comes closer to the experimental world. The new quantifier should take into account prior information about the parameters to be measured, deliver confidence intervals, and output sensitivities per square root of Hertz. Thirdly, we want to propose concrete concepts for novel quantum enhanced sensors that are relevant for the quantum hybrid systems investigated in the SFB/TRR 21 and that can be realized there experimentally.
