We are interested in the molecular elucidation of the labile row-type in barley showing irregular spikelet fertility along the spike. The labile row-type is a natural row-type variant predominantly occurring in accessions from Ethiopia. In a recent study, my group mapped the recessive labile (lab) locus to the long arm of chromosome 5H (Youssef et al., 2014). During the proposed project we would like to (i) phenotypically better understand the labile phenotype (macro- and microscopically), (ii) identify the gene underlying the lab locus, and (iii) investigate its molecular function.
