Final Report Abstract

Exercise in pediatric oncology is of great importance for improved care and has the potential not only to restore some normality to affected children and adolescents, but also to make everyday hospital life more active. At the time of application, however, little scientific evidence was available on the effectiveness of exercise. This is mainly due to the methodological challenges of conducting highquality studies with a correspondingly large number of participants. These can only be achieved through multicenter studies. The concrete goal of the scientific network was therefore the preparation and submission of multicenter research proposals on the topic of sports therapy in pediatric oncology. For this purpose, the first step was to agree on uniform diagnostic and training methods that can then be used in studies and also in care throughout Germany. In small groups, 1) the development of a training manual with background knowledge, photos and exercises for patients and their families and 2) the development and publication of a systematic literature review on the sports science diagnostic methods used in pediatric oncology took place. The network consisted of 14 scientists (sports scientists and pediatricians) and met in 11 meetings. The 12th final meeting took place in the form of an international 2-day virtual conference in April 2022 with about 300 participants from all continents. Four multicenter research proposals were submitted from the network during the grant period. The collaboration in the scientific network has greatly improved the collaboration on this topic. Even after the end of the funding period, there will be further close exchange and the addition of young scientists in this area.
