Antimicrobial resistance of bacteria is a growing threat to the world. This is due to the excessive use of antibiotics and at the same time the low level of investment in the development of new drugs. Pleuromutilin antibiotics are a relatively new family of antibacterial drugs based on natural products. Pleuromutilin is a complex fungal-derived terpene having antimicrobial activity. Several representatives of this class of substances are already on the market, for use in humans as well as in veterinary medicine. However, clinical resistance begins to develop. The aim of this project is the establishment of a new synthetic strategy for compounds based on the pleuromutilin scaffold. The proposed synthetic strategy allows the synthesis of a large variety of new molecules and will therefore help to maintain the effectiveness of this powerful antibiotic class.
