Modular High-Current Variable-Voltage Rectifiers

Subject Area Electrical Energy Systems, Power Management, Power Electronics, Electrical Machines and Drives
Electronic Semiconductors, Components and Circuits, Integrated Systems, Sensor Technology, Theoretical Electrical Engineering
Term from 2016 to 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 314461654

The task of this project is to develop a high-current variable-voltage rectifier of the 1 MW class based on the concept of modular multi-level converter (MMC) concept. Each MMC module, equipped with SiC devices, will be supplemented by a resonant tank and medium frequency transformer. Soft switching of SiC devices will tremendously reduce losses and allow higher switching frequency so that the passive components shrink in size. As final goal, the converter's efficiency is expected to reach 98% efficiency with very low input THD and about 50% size of state-of-the-art rectifiers.
