Final Report Abstract

In this research project, the high-speed test bench was completely rebuilt and thus optimized. To measure the cutting forces, the DMS-based metrological instrumentation was developed together with the projectile. The new constructive de- velopments in the test bench enable the range of experimental investigations of cutting processes to be expanded. For example, the cutting experiments of the printing and pulling cut can be carried out with the force sensor both without a counter-blade and with a counter-blade without destroying the projectile. As part of the project, the DEM simulation model was created in EDEM software for modeling the cutting process of the stalk-like grass material. For this purpose, the mathematical relationships between the determined material properties and the dry matter content / water content per internode for the examined grass plants were found by means of the numerical approximation. In addition, the geometry of each internode of the grass plants, namely: the inner and outer diameter, the length of each entire plant, each internode and the ear, was measured and then statistically evaluated. The cutting simulations carried out show the good image-based qualitative results from the DEM analysis. From a mathematical or quantitative point of view, however, the simu- lative and experimental results of the cutting forces differ from each other due to the linear bond model in EDEM. The converted high-speed test bench with the measuring instruments is to be used both for the further development of the cutting theory and for the calibration of simula- tion calculations. On this basis, realistic simulation models can be generated, which contribute to the further rapid development of the harvesting system and thus sustain- able harvesting of stalk plants. The data sets obtained can be used for the optimization of already existing constructions or the fundamental development of new constructions of cutting devices and their working bodies.
