Fabrication and characterization of tailored electrodes as model systems

Subject Area Chemical and Thermal Process Engineering
Term from 2016 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 276655287

The main objective of TP 3 Roth is the fabrication of specifically tailored Ag-based electrodes for ORR and CO2RR and their systematic structural and electrochemical characterization. These electrodes will be rather similar in appearance to the technical electrodes of TP 1 Turek, but use home-made size and shape-selected Ag nanoparticles to obtain in-depth insight into the structure sensitivity of the CO2RR. Results from 3-electrode tests in an H cell will be transferred to gas diffusion electrodes (GDE). Specific emphasis will be placed on the difference between low CO2 concentrations in liquid electrolyte as compared to gas phase CO2 offered to the GDE. TP 3 Roth is divided into 4 work packages: in AP 1 and in direct collaboration with TP 1 Turek so-called limiting region-electrodes will be fabricated via electrospinning and the in-situ cell design of the ORR cell for radiography/tomography measurements will be further developed together with TP 4 Manke. AP 2 will focus on the synthesis of size- and shape-selected Ag nanoparticles und their electrochemical testing in an H cell with low concentrated CO2 in the liquid electrolyte. Results obtained will be transferred to gas diffusion electrodes and highly concentrated gas phase CO2 (AP 3). AP 4 is dedicated to the development of a reliable and sophisticated CO2RR analysis (gas and liquid phase) with respect to the various aspects tackled by the collaboration partners and the development of suitable cells and sample environments.
