Final Report Abstract

With this project we have successfully demonstrated that external respiratory surrogate signals such as a respiratory sensor or a pilot tone can be used for motion correction of 3D high-resolution cardiac MR scans. The high temporal resolution of the external surrogate signals allows for a readout-by-readout correction and hence can also take inter- and intracycle variation of the respiratory motion into account. In addition, RS and PT do not rely on MR data acquisition. This could be especially important for simultaneous PET-MR scans, where the quantitative motion information from RS and PT could also be used for motioncorrected image reconstruction of PET data without interfering with the standard clinical MR protocol. One remaining challenge is the temporal stability of the external surrogates. Future work will focus on developing a feedback system which evaluates the temporal stability and triggers recalibration if the accuracy of surrogate signals cannot be guaranteed anymore. We do not plan to patent any of the developed techniques but the project is carried out in collaboration with an industry partner to facilitate the translation into clinical healthcare.
