The aim is to understand and manipulate the non-equilibrium dynamics of the photochromic molecule 2-(2,4-dinitrobenzyl)pyridine (α-DNBP) in the condensed phase with varying solvent environments. We employ ultrafast pump/nonlinear resonance Raman probe spectroscopy since it offers the necessary time-resolution in combination with high chemical specificity. The second aim is to establish surface-enhanced nonlinear Raman spectroscopy for monitoring the non-equilibrium dynamics of only few/single molecules nearby highly reproducible, signal-enhancing plasmonic nanostructures such as ideal dimers of gold nanospheres.
