Final Report Abstract

On the one hand, the online catalogue of Palestrina's works records all relevant bibliographical data on the 771 musical works that can be proven to be authentic – for which there are currently almost 5,000 printed and manuscript sources (up to 1903) with a total of around 24,000 source references scattered worldwide – in a database. In addition, the works were digitised on the basis of their most important sources (procedure: diplomatic recording of parts in score order with the aid of the text-based notation programme LilyPond). The score digitizations can be viewed in their entirety and downloaded, as can the work data, source descriptions and bibliographies. A quick determination of source-specific readings is possible with the help of an automatic voice comparison. In addition, beyond the usual database search procedures, it is also possible to search the recorded parts/scores in a comprehensive sense for musical parameters and structural relationships by means of a graphic note input (mensural notes). These musical search procedures include a full-text melody search (polyphonic up to four voices) as well as an interval search. In addition, user-generated similarity searches can be carried out within the framework of the melody search function. The research and evaluation of sources yielded a number of unexpected findings and insights. For example, the number of opera dubia, which was around 80 at the beginning of the project, has now increased to 425. Such a ratio is not found with any other composer and shows the far-reaching influence of Palestrina. In addition, 53 clear misattributions could be identified and, with regard to the single and collective prints with works by Palestrina, some information in the RISM database could be expanded or corrected. The novelty of this project is the linking of a catalogue of works and sources with the visualisation of near-source score representations in digital form, which, in contrast to the printed forms of publication, can offer extensive research approaches as well as more diverse and comprehensible information and presentation methods and is thus equally suitable for scholarship and practice (for example, by making a work available for musical interpretation in various locally, institutionally or historically conditioned performance variants).
