Definition, development, and design of simple productsProducts are becoming more complex today primarily due to increasing customers requirements that may change constantly during development. Such changes can also be the result of influences from the (later) operating environments of the product as well as from the fact that products increasingly consist of combinations of components from the fields of mechanics, hydrau-ics / pneumatics, electrics / electronics and information processing. The more complex a product is, the more difficult and confusing becomes the area of conflict of its design, evaluation, control, and reproducibility of its development, production, use, and liquidation activities. One key request of design methodology is that a product should be unambiguous, simple, and safe. While unambiguousity and safety can be clearly defined, reproducible descriptions, rules, and procedures for developing a simple product are clearly missing, although numerous advantages in all its life stages are attributed to a simple product. In this research project, reproducible definitions, descriptions, methods, and tools should therefore be developed that allow a simple product to be designed in a way that it provides the best solution for the given problem under all circumstances.
