Computational techniques on the stochastic excitation of rolling tires from the rough road surface contact

In previous investigations on the high-frequency noise radiated from rolling tires using detailed finite element models, we obtained qualitatively accurate results. However, we identified two issues: the eigenfrequencies computed are lower than those observed in experiments, and the influence of road texture is not fully understood. In the proposed project, we intend to remedy these issues by making two distinct improvements: (a) extending the method by a stochastic excitation function describing the interaction ofthe macroscopic tire model and the detailed meso-mechanical contact behavior of the tire tread with the road surface; (b) including dynamic stiffening effects in the rubber compound. The planned multilevel stochastic approach accounts for the random process nature of rough surfaces and will therefore be capable of predicting rolling noise across a variety of surface characteristics. The stochastic scheme will therefore satisfyrequests from tire industry for a parametric model capable of identifying effects of surface parameters on the tire vibration behavior.
