Text and Image in Greek Sculpture: A Case-Study on Athens and Olympia From Archaic to Imperial Age (A10)
Subject Area
Classical, Roman, Christian and Islamic Archaeology
Term
from 2016 to 2023
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 178035969
The research project studies inscribed text on Greek statuary monuments, focusing on the cases of Athens and Olympia from Archaic to Imperial Age. Within a comparatist approach, the project analyses the multiple ways in which inscription and statue can relate to each other, and how these interrelationships change diachronically. The overriding aim is to reach an understanding of the Greek statuary monument as a textual-pictorial medium that overcomes the (disciplinary and intellectual) dichotomies between text and image.
