Subproject M1 targets different aspects of the multi-scale nature of geophysical flows from a mathematical perspective. On the one hand, we provide diagnostic tools based on covariant Lyapunov vectors (CLVs) to investigate scale interactions that are important for mixing and energy transfers in long-term simulations. On the other hand, we address the mathematical foundation and properties of models used in the CRC for large scales that entail a small-scale `subgrid' model and parameterization. Based on a unified framework of models, we hope to pave the way towards implementing CLV methods into more comprehensive climate models used in the CRC.
