The project will update the national climate models ICON-a/o and IFS-FESOM with new parameterizations and numerics. We will implement improved versions of two novel atmospheric gravity wave parameterizations, a new dynamically consistent sub-grid momentum dissipation scheme for atmosphere turbulence, energetically consistent coupling of an ocean surface wave model, novel numerical algorithms for ocean models, and new gravity waves and sub-mesoscale eddy closures for ocean models. As a synthesis effort, we will provide sophisticated diagnostics of the simulated ocean-atmosphere energy cycle.
