Project Details
Trapped-ion quantum magnetism (A01)
Subject Area
Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas
Term
since 2016
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 274200144
We aim to study quantum magnetism by arranging ions in 2D arrays and by inducing effective spin-spin interactions using embedded microwave sources for scalability to large system sizes. This allows the realisation of a programmable simulator. Towards this end, we have demonstrated high-fidelity spin-spin interactions between two ions, developed fabrication methods of scalable surface-electrode traps and realised a cryogenic ion trap setup. Our goal for the future is to demonstrate an ion-trap array comprising individually controllable ion traps and directly contribute to the DQ-mat core goals of scaling, manipulating & characterizing quantum systems and exploring many-body physics.
