Quantum engineering molecular ions for precision spectroscopy (B05)

Subject Area Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas
Term from 2016 to 2024
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 274200144

The aim of this project is to perform high resolution spectroscopy of a single trapped molecular oxygen ion. Successful methods developed for atoms are not transferable to molecules due to their complex structure. In the last funding period we have started to develop quantum logic techniques, where a single atomic ion provides cooling and readout capabilities for a co-trapped molecular ion. In the future, we will complement the quantum logic toolbox and perform precision spectroscopy of vibrational transitions and derive an upper bound for possible variations of the proton-to-electron mass through comparison with B02, B03, and B04. We contribute to the design of composite quantum systems and tests of fundamental physics in DQ-mat.
