The aspect of thermal treatment of particles and micro samples will be extended to thermochemical treatment in the next phase of the project U03. The focus will be on the targeted and reproducible transfer of nitrogen onto micro samples in a size range from few micrometers to 1 mm. Due to the time consuming diffusion process of nitrogen, a major advantage of the pre-alloying of powder samples with its small length scales can be adapted and nitrided powders can be processed to macro samples for instance by using additive manufacturing processes. The spherical micro samples and macro samples from additive manufacturing can be characterized using proper descriptors, as well as macroscopically common characteristic properties. The thermochemical treatment will initially be carried out in TGA and will be extended to a fluidized bed reactor for high throughput.
