Measurement of the Gamow-Teller strengths of Cd-116 und Sn-116 using the (3He,t)-reaction for neutrino- and nuclear structure physics

Subject Area Nuclear and Elementary Particle Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Relativity, Fields
Term from 2016 to 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 320721400

The Gamow-Teller strength for the nuclides Cd-116 and Sn-116 should be measured using the (3He,t) reaction. The measurements will be performed using the Grand Raiden spectrometer at RCNP Osaka as this device has the world best energy resolution. The measurement of Cd-116 is interesting for neutrino physics. Cd-116 is a double beta emitter, which is used in several experiments. This measurement will allow to determine the nuclear matrix element for the neutrino accompanied double beta more precisely. Also the spin-dipole strength can be measured. Both will help to understand the individual contributions to the nuclear matrix element for the neutrinoless double beta decay. Similar measurements have already been performed for other double beta emitters. The measurement of the Gamow-Teller strengths of Cd-116 als will show the ability of using this nuclide for a solar and supernova large scale detector and expected rates can be realistically estimated. The measurement of Sn-116( daughter of the Cd-116 double beta decay) has magic proton numbers. In this way it is possible to check systematically the behaviour of the GT-strength as function of isospin. Part of the collaboration has already measured the nuclides Sn-118 and Sn-120. An essential aspect is the calibration, which is typically taken from beta decay and electron capture data. However, they should often significant uncertainties, hence a new experimental setup is planned to improve this situation.
