Cyril of Alexandria's Commentary on 2. Corinthians. Introduction, Critical Text, Translation, Analysis
Final Report Abstract
Cyril of Alexandria’s commentary on 2. Corinthians has never been the subject of a scientific inquiry. In this project, the commentary – surviving now only in fragments and originally consisting of several extensive books – was completely and critically edited and translated into a modern language for the first time. In this context, the whole – both Greek and Syriac – manuscript tradition of the commentary was examined; in addition, the questions about the dating of the work, its linguistic profile, its original readership and its structure and scope were discussed. All surviving fragments of the script were then subjected to complex philological and substantive analyzes, which provided detailed insights into Cyril’s highly original language and in his exegetical-theological thought. Finally, a summary overview of the main themes of the commentary, a presentation of Cyril’s hermeneutical and exegetical principles and an encyclopedia-like list of all the investigated expressions and phrases that can be described as specifically Cyrillian were provided.
