The application is for a high-end, multicolor flow cytometer to replace an aging 3-color machine originally installed in 1995. Highly multiplexed and multicolor analyses have become increasingly prevalent in recent years in flow cytometry. This is due to the increased availabilty of fluorescent dyes and functional stains for flow cytometry in many more colors than were previously available, as well as to an increased availability of solid state lasers of a variety of wavelengths which can now be used to excite these new dyes and stains. The new cytometer would enable us to carry out highly multiplexed experiments on samples which are often limited in cell number, allowing the identification of new populations of cells through the possibility of combining new markers, new combinations of fluorescent proteins, and also functional stains. The cytometer would be placed in a newly established core facility specialized in fluorescence technologies. This will allow researchers from across the Uniklinik to have access to the new machine, as well as receive support with regard to experimental planning and proper use of the instrumentation from the experienced members of the facility.
