Perspective photometric methods for non-Lambertian surfaces

Specular highlights bear significant information for the spatial perception of glossy or mirror-like surfaces. Together with the shading of objects and the linear perspective such illumination effects are for instance used in paintings in order to give a threedimensional impression of depicted scenes.In recent photometric methods in computer vision, different illumination directions are used together with such linear perspective views, however, up to now this has only been considered together with the simplest model of diffuse surface reflectance. Specular reflections have often been considered asoutliers, although exactly such effects can provide important information of threedimensional shape.Moreover, also diffuse reflectance is known to be of complex nature for many materials, but advanced reflectance models have not been employed in photometric stereo up to now.The aim of this DFG-project is to provide new models for perspective photometric 3-D reconstruction. In particular specular highlights and other non-Lambertian effects shall be considered for shape computation in these new models. In contrast to other modern methods for photometric stereo a more flexible modelling approach shall be employed that allows for the estimation of model parameters which is highly important for practical applications.
