Electrical conductivity and magnetism at organic single crystal charge transfer interfaces
Final Report Abstract
This project was aimed at the better understanding of charge-transfer effects in organic semiconductors. We grew pure and mixed-molecule organic semiconductor single crystals, characterized their structural and electronic properties, fabricated charge-transfer devices via interfacial or bulk doping, and studied the charge-transfer effects occurred in these devices. In our charge-transfer co-crystals we found interesting correlations between the molecular structure and the intermolecular interactions and the amount of charge transfer. Furthermore, we developed modulation doping in organic semiconductors and showed that it allows achieving superior doping efficiencies even for high doping densities, when conventional bulk doping runs into the reserve regime. Besides that, we found that interfacial doping (in comparison to bulk doping) is a more efficient way to achieve electrical conductivity in a semiconducting polymer. On the other hand, we observed that the structure of the acceptor material (amorphous or crystalline) at the interface with a rubrene single crystal does not have a significant influence on the charge-carrier mobility in rubrene.
