Was bestimmt die Konzentration von Aerosolpartikeln in der marinen Grenzschicht über dem atlantischen Ozean?

Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

In the marine environment of the ACORES archipelago vertical profiles (16 measurement flights) of aerosol number size distributions and number concentration around Graciosa Island as well as almost a full month (July 2017) of aerosol data at the ARM site ENA (sea level, Graciosa island) and the 2225m asl mountain site Pico Mountain (OMP, Pico island) were collected along with a full suite of meteorological and cloud parameters. On Pico Mountain a typical monomodal aerosol number size distribution with the maximum concentration between 50 and 200 nm most of the time was observed. In direct comparison, the number size distribution measured at ENA showed the typical bimodal shape with no obvious connection to the free troposphere. Specific case studies, such as the occurrence of a cloud and the formation of new particles were observed at the mountain site. The vertical profiles measured with the helicopter-borne platform ACTOS include situations with lowlevel clouds but also cloud-free cases. The flight pattern was chosen according to the meteorological situation and thus, cloud-free days were dedicated as aerosol flights, where the vertical structure and vertical transport was the focus of the flight. These days were ideal cases to estimate the vertical turbulent transport of aerosol particles and three different methods were applied for the first time to such data. In combination with CCN measurements the data can also be used to study aerosol cloud interaction directly when combining measurement inside and outside of cloud. Furthermore, new particle formation has been observed on top of marine stratocumulus clouds several times and needs to be analysed in more detail in the future. Here, a similar connection between cloud, radiation and aerosol formation (as in Wehner et al. 2015) might be the reason.
