Development of a new ternary blend with an outstanding combination of properties

Subject Area Plastics Engineering
Term from 2017 to 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 330226041

Based on the knowledge generated in preceding DFG research project, this Knowledge Transfer Project has the aim to develop a applicable PA6 blend, which has increased impact strength without decreasing the Youngs modulus or the strength, in cooperation with ALBIS PLASTIC GmbH. In addition, the elongation of break should stay on a high level. Reaching this aims would overcome the common limitation that the impact strength can only be increased when the Youngs modulus and the strength is drastically decreased. This special combination of properties would make the new developed blend unique in the market. The new PA6 material should consist of a ternary blend, which consists of PA6 as matrix, separated, organic modified nano silicate clays to increase the strength and the stiffness and non-cross-linked rubber with an optimal particle size and distribution to improve the impact strength. In this project it will be important to produce the new blend on commercial twin screw extruders. Furthermore, this project deals with the advancement of the existing filler simulation models, which works well for macroscopic fillers, and wants to adapt the existing models for the use for nanoscale fillers. This advancement should help to predict the anisotropic properties and should be used in the application of the new ternary blend.
