The Fate of Cold Clouds in Galaxy Outflows

Subject Area Astrophysics and Astronomy
Term from 2017 to 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 343993325

Final Report Year 2022

Final Report Abstract

This proposal funded the postdoctoral position of Dr. Wladimir Banda-Barragan at the University of Hamburg. With Dr. Banda-Barragan we could employ an outstanding postdoc who is an expert in hydrodynamical simulations of astrophysical flows. He worked successfully on simulations of multi-phase flows and has made a lasting impact on the entire field, all this in spite of the difficulties imposed by the COVID pandemic. As we detail in the report below, his work went far beyond the goals that we had initially designated for project. In particular we investigated the survival of non-uniform clouds, the interaction between shock waves and a large sets of clouds, and cloud-cloud collisions. At the end of the project, Dr. Banda-Barragan moved to a permanent faculty position in Ecuador. In this work our main collaborators were Prof. C. Federrath (Australian National University) and Prof. E. Scannapieco (Arizona State University).
