Excavations in Egypt would be impossible without the "helping hands" of the local workmen. They contributd massively to the success of archaeological projects. Acknowledgements in archaeological publications, however, most often do not refer to these workmen. There are only a small number of studies about these workmen. Since 2003, the Egyptian-German joint mission "The Asyut Project" has been conducting archaeological fieldwork on Gebel Asyut al-gharbi in the necropolis of the ancient town of Asyut in Middle Egypt. tn 2011, Tina Beck carried out a study to the local workmen of "The Asyut Project". ln accordance with the workmen, she conducted semi-structural interviews. ln addition, the Egyptian artist Ammar Abou Bakr made drawings of the workmen. This study gives for the first time insight into the ideas of the local workmen about their work, about archaeology and archaeological heritage'
