Development of a method for in-situ determination of deposition efficiency in thermal spraying

Subject Area Production Automation and Assembly Technology
Coating and Surface Technology
Term from 2017 to 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 352196289

Particle diagnostics are widely used in the field of thermal spraying. They enable process monitoring through in-situ determination of the state variables of particles in free jet. Through the monitoring and limiting the fluctuations of the state variables of the particles, it is possible to achieve quality assurance of the manufactured coatings. Nevertheless, in-situ determination of the deposition rate and the deposition efficiency based on the state variables of the particles in free jet is not state of the art. The aim of this project is the development of a methodology that will enable the in-situ determination of the holistic particle mass flow rate. The in-situ determination of the deposition rate and the deposition efficiency will be realized by measuring the mass flow rate of the particles that impinge on the substrate and the particles that rebound off the substrate. In order to achieve this, a particle diagnostics system with the ability to determine the particle velocities and sizes is necessary. Within the framework of this project the HiWatch Compact System will be utilized for this purpose.
