Generation and analysis of Vector Beams, a new generation of singular laser beams

Subject Area Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas
Term from 2006 to 2008
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 35634973

The intended research project concentrates on the generation and analysis of a family of generalized vector beams, that are linearly polarized laser beams whose transversal field distribution exhibit a spatial dependency of the direction of polarization. A particular class of those beams carry a singularity of the direction of the polarization in their centers. They have remarkable properties as for example a smaller focus compared to homogeneously polarized beams. The generalization of those beams would be to accept not only linear, but arbitrary polarization, but with the same spatial distribution of the main direction of the polarization ellipses. Those generalized beams would then contain real generic polarization singularities, namely different types of C points (points of pure circular polarization) and probably be structurally stable. The generation of these beams with three different promising methods (conical refraction, controlled stress birefringence and spatial light modulators), their classification in matters of their singular character and analysis with respect to properties like structural stability are the goals of this project.
