Modelling of a Lithium-Air-Battery using three-dimensional high resolution in-operando X-ray tomography and impedance spectroscopy

Subject Area Electrical Energy Systems, Power Management, Power Electronics, Electrical Machines and Drives
Term from 2017 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 357753796

Aim of the project is a fundamental understanding of the structural and morphological processes in Li-air batteries and the development of a physico-chemical three-dimensional model of the electrode structures. Synchrotron X-ray tomography will be used to investigate the 3D structures in a Li-air battery in-operando during discharging/charging. The structural and morphological processes will be described quantitatively and the relevant structural parameters responsible for the battery properties will be identified. Together with in-operando impedance measurements a better fundamental understanding of the processes in the battery will be achieved. Based on the collected tomographic data the 3D structure model will be developed and later used for simulation studies. The simulations will help to understand the complex battery behaviour at different operating conditions and will be used for development of optimized electrode structures.
