Chronological Overview of Pottery from Asyut

Subject Area Egyptology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies
Term from 2017 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 364754002

Since 2003, the Egyptian-German joint mission “The Asyut Project” has been conducting archaeological fieldwork on Gebel Asyut al-gharbi in the necropoleis of the ancient town of Asyut in Middle Egypt. Innumerable fragments of pottery as well as complete vessels were unearthed. These objects cover the time span from the 4th millennium BCE up until now. This rich corpus of pottery is contradictory to the hitherto nearly complete missing of recorded pottery from Assiut. The book gives for the first time a detailed chronological overview of pottery from Asyut – from the 4th millennium BCE to the end of the 1st millennium CE. Pottery housed in the British Museum in London, the Louvre in Paris, the Museo Egizio di Torino, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston complement the study. In addition, the distribution of the pottery gives some circumstantial evidence to the localization of ancient necropoleis on the Gebel Asyut al-gharbi.
