German Text Archive - Creation of an Active Archive of German texts and associated software tools

Subject Area General and Comparative Linguistics, Experimental Linguistics, Typology, Non-European Languages
Term from 2007 to 2017
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 37149321

The aim of the DTA is to digitize a cross-disciplinary set of texts of the German language originating from ca. 1600 to 1900, and to prepare this corpus as a basis for a reference corpus for the historical New High German language. To document the historical language as accurately as possible, the digital texts are generally based on the first editions of the respective works. The DTA corpus is freely accessible via the internet, and, due to linguistic analyses of the texts, searchable using spelling tolerant searching algorithms. All texts are available for download. The DTA is to be developed as an "active archive", which makes scientifically and socially relevant texts freely available to all interested parties via the Internet. "Active" means that the DTA not only distributes texts, but that it participates in research projects of various kinds through cooperation with various institutions. So it could play a key role in national and international research, which is dependent on German texts. In particular, it will contribute to a better interdisciplinary coordination of research in the humanities and social sciences.
