The nature of the chiral phase transition and the role of the axial anomaly is investigated using two complementary approaches, lattice QCD and the functional renormalization group applied to the QCD action. The main goals are to pin down the universal properties of the chiral phase transition, to explore its properties in an extended parameter space including non-vanishing chemical potential and large number of flavors, and to provide tighter bounds on the location of the critical endpoint in QCD with physical quark masses. We will perform lattice QCD calculations and will compare the results with functional renormalization group calculations adjusted to conditions met in lattice QCD calculations. The results of this project will provide relevant information for the identification of critical behavior related to the QCD transition in heavy-ion experiments.
