The dynamics of strong-interaction matter in regimes of extreme temperature and density are governed by the fundamental excitations of the medium. In this project we will advance the understanding of the in-medium excitations that exist in QCD, how they are modified within the QCD phase diagram, and their experimental signatures, by analyzing the temperature, density, and quark-flavor dependence of hadronic spectral functions using a range of complementary techniques: lattice QCD, non-perturbative analytic quantum field theory, and effective phenomenological approaches.
