Final Report Abstract

The pyrolysis of different Cp(Fe)arene hexafluorophosphate salts was investigated. Different metal complexes led to various nanostructures of carbon, like carbon nanocapsules, nanofibers, spheres and other forms. The pyrolysis parameters and also the influence of the starting material on the resulting carbon material showed that very small changes in the starting material had a significant impact on the forni of the resulting material. Even arene complexes with the same molecular formula, but different substitution pattern on the arene ring gave different carbon nanomaterial. In addition, salts with other counter anions, like bistriflamide, iodide or tetraphenylborate were giving different nanostructured material. Carbon nanotubes have attracted significant scientific attention due to their potential as unique electronic and mechanically robust materials. Other nanostructures of carbon have also high potential, for example as gas-storage media, Li-intercalation materials for batteries, and cold electronfield emitters. Furthermore, it was found that Ti and V complexes can be used in the pyrolysis experiments. The resulting products were TiC and VC nanospheres in neariy quantitative yield. The characterization of these new nanostructures was performed by HRTEM, EDX and XRD.
