Recently, new developments in electron microscopy have been carried out, which permit studies with very high resolution under physiological and reactive conditions. Due to the enormous potential, we seek to equip our location with this innovative technology. A consortium of scientists from the Universities of Rostock and Greifswald, the Wismar University of Applied Sciences as well as associated institutes has been established under the leadership of the Department Science and Technology of Life, Light and Matter (LL&M) at the University of Rostock. The common goal of LLM is the analysis, control and design of systems governed through processes on the atomic and molecular level. This proposal originates from long-standing research activities in the fields of materials, cellular processes, catalysis, atomic interfaces, molecular systems, and nanoparticle characterization. One major success of LL&M has been to attract funding for a research center (Forschungsbau), providing the necessary lab space and instrumentation for the interdisciplinary research and training within LL&M. Especially the intended location in the newly built research center is predestined for such a device, as the building comprises a series of large-scale devices for supplementary analysis in a highly interdisciplinary environment and is also structurally prepared for the installation of a HR-TEM. Finally, it is obvious that with such an investment, we can face international competition with regard to student training and scientific qualification.
