The goal of the project is to develop new discretization methods forthe computer simulation of coupled thermomechanical problems. Thefocus is on the development of thermodynamically consistent (TC)methods. TC methods are capable of preserving major structuralproperties of the underlying continuous problem. In particular, TCmethods aim at the satisfaction of both the first and second law ofthermodynamics. In addition to that, they exactly satisfy the balancelaw for angular momentum. Due to their structure-preserving features, the newly envisaged TC methods are expected to yield improvednumerical stability, robustness and accuracy when compared tostandard methods.
