Multiferroicity in mixed-spin low-dimensional magnetic systems
Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
In the project we synthesized and studied new frustrated correlated electron systems as well as single crystals of established ones. The main experimental methods applied were Electron Spin Resonance studies, dilatometry, magnetization and calorimetry, and single crystal growth. Starting with howardevansites and other quasi-1D materials, we extended our work to 2D materials and also included further magnetoelectrics such as titanates as well as other highly frustrated materials. Both the pandemia and eventually the Russian attack war forced significant changes in the work plan. Still, having had access to a variety of new materials in the very center of the group’s research activities, hosting Russian guest researchers before 2022 in Heidelberg, the project turned out to be an incubator to attract students, to initiate lots of new collaborations, and to provide the preliminary work for two follow-up large-scale project. The main scientific results concern: (1) Magnetoelectric and magnetoelastic coupling in quasi-1D systems; (2) Magnetoelastic coupling in 2D van-der-Waals materials; (3) Phase diagrams, low-energy magnons and spin-lattice coupling in titanates. (4) Magnetic phase diagrams and spin-freezing in highly frustrated rare-earth systems.
