The Cluster of Excellence Hausdorff Center for Mathematics (HCM) promotes cutting-edge research in the field of mathematics and its applications, making Bonn a world-leading center and a focal point for top international researchers. The research program of HCM covers a broad spectrum of mathematics, from groundbreaking foundational research to industrial and medical applications, increasing Germany’s international visibility in mathematical research. We enter the new funding period with eleven newly hired PIs. This is reflected in our research agenda featuring: advances in the Langlands program using categorical, representation-theoretic and analytic methods; new structures in algebra and geometry, a prototypical example being condensed mathematics; inverse problems and reconstruction from an analytic and numerical perspective; probabilistic modeling and limit behavior of complex systems; optimal problem-adapted approximation spaces for high-dimensional problems; mathematical methods in economics with a focus on information, mechanism and market design; combinatorial optimization with real-world applications; formalized mathematics and computer-verified proofs. An integral part of our research profile is the Hausdorff Research Institute for Mathematics (HIM), a unique institution in Germany which offers thematic Trimester Programs in all areas of mathematics and theoretical economics. With its events and workshops, it attracts hundreds of international scientists every year. Together with the Max Planck Institute’s guest program, this makes Bonn a vibrant international hub for mathematics. A special focus of HCM is on a comprehensive, competitive and innovatively structured early-career program for PhD students and postdocs, the Hausdorff School for Mathematics (HSM). Key initiatives of HSM that foster early independence include collaborative research retreats, an international exchange program and specialized topic schools. Our successful Bonn Junior Fellows program is the springboard to a permanent career in academia. HCM is built around a team of internationally recognized and award-winning scientists. Awards in the previous funding period include a Leibniz Prize, an EMS Prize, two New Horizon Prizes, a Cole Prize and 10 ERC grants. With our new PIs recruited from universities such as Cambridge, Paris-Saclay, Wisconsin, MIT, ETH Zürich and the London School of Economics, HCM combines the tradition of excellent research with a new and dynamically developing agenda.
