ECONtribute’s goal is to break new ground in the analysis of markets & public policy. Motivated by pressing societal challenges, ECONtribute has advanced a new perspective in the first funding period by incorporating manifold ways of human thinking and acting into analyses of markets and policies. This includes drawing on notions of fairness, social preferences, beliefs, and expectations to explain market behavior, guide effective market and policy design, and the development of tools to assess the distributive implications of policies. The research output from the previous funding period, along with its recognition in public debates, provides ample evidence of ECONtribute’s impact on science, policy, and society. ECONtribute has become a world-renowned home to outstanding scholars rooted in fundamental research who combine insights from behavioral economics, economic theory, legal science, management science, political science, psychology, and sociology. In the upcoming funding period, ECONtribute’s aim is to advance to a new era of public policy analysis, by focusing on policies that are both politically feasible and that acknowledge policy challenges in managing disruptive crises. (1) The first new theme “political feasibility” will entail a systematic investigation of the conditions and constraints under which policy proposals attract sufficient support in society. (2) The second new theme “public policy in crisis-prone economies” is motivated by massive policy interventions in response to recent crises. It asks how economies can be made resilient in the face of crises, and how short-run policy reactions can be aligned with long-term policy goals. ECONtribute will launch the ECONtribute Policy Preference Tracker, a recurrent cross-country public opinion survey, to test and apply new measurement tools and to identify the conditions of public policy support. ECONtribute promotes two-way knowledge exchange and transfer of research findings through science communication and public events. The experiences of ECONtribute researchers in their interaction with both policymakers and decision-makers in firms and other institutions feed back into the Cluster’s research program. A systematic reflection on issues that arise in the process of policy implementation is an integral part of ECONtribute’s research agenda. ECONtribute is an international hub for scholars that supports early-career researchers with a variety of tailored measures provided by its Young ECONtribute Program and ECONtribute Accelerator Program, and Selten Fellow professorships with tenure track. ECONtribute promotes equity and diversity with an evidence-based concept, drawing largely on insights generated by Cluster research.
