Analysis of wear mechanisms in grinding of polycrystalline diamond with vitrified bonded grinding wheels based on a friction model

Subject Area Metal-Cutting and Abrasive Manufacturing Engineering
Term since 2017
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 391043282

The primary research objective of this project is to predict the thermal and mechanical loads during grinding of polycrystalline diamond as a function of the physical properties of the cooling lubricant and the grinding parameters, as well as to explain the resulting grinding wheel wear and material removal mechanisms. For this purpose, the friction models developed in the previous DFG project for determining the tribological conditions in the contact zone during PCD grinding with grinding oil must be adapted for the use of different cooling lubricants. The microscopic thermal and mechanical loads in the contact zones calculated on the basis of these models allow an explanation of the material removal and grinding wheel wear mechanisms during grinding of polycrystalline diamond as a function of the physical properties of the cooling lubricant.
