Erforschung der Kristallzüchtung des neuen, wide-bandgap, nichtlinearen Nichtoxidkristalls BaGa4S7 und seine Anwendung in optisch-parametrischen Verstärkern

Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Dieses Projekt war einem Vertreter der neu entwickelten Klasse von Barium enthaltenden, nichtlinearen Chalkogenid-Kristallen, welche keine Chalkopyrit Symmetrie aufweisen, gewidmet. Diese Kristalle sind speziell für Anwendungen im mittleren Infrarot (mid-IR) Spektralbereich geeignet. Die Hauptaktivitäten umfassten die Charakterisierung relevanter Eigenschaften sowie die Demonstration spezifischer Vorteile bei der parametrischen Frequenzkonversion von Laserquellen, die im 1-µm Spektralbereich emittieren, in den mid-IR Bereich oberhalb 5 µm. Zu den charakterisierten Eigenschaften gehören Transparenz und Bandlücke, Brechzahl und Doppelbrechung als Funktion von Wellenlänge und Temperatur, Komponenten des Suszeptibilitätstensors zweiter Ordnung mit ihren relativen Vorzeichen, thermomechanische Eigenschaften wie Härte, E-Modul, anisotrope Wärmeausdehnung und Wärmeleitfähigkeit, und nichtlinearer Brechungsindex. Auf der Grundlage realisierter Dreiwellen-Mischprozesse wurden Sellmeier-Gleichungen und thermooptische Beziehungen gefittet, um die Phasenanpassungseigenschaften besser zu beschreiben. Interessante Konfigurationen für unkritische 90°-Phasenanpassung und breitbandige parametrische Verstärkung wurden identifiziert. Es wurden spezielle Ansätze entwickelt, um die relativen Vorzeichen der nichtlinearen Koeffizienten in Kristallen mit niedriger Symmetrie zu bestimmen, die für eine reproduzierbare Orientierung wesentlich sind. Damit wurde eine maximierte effektive Nichtlinearität für einen gegebenen parametrischen Prozess sichergestellt. BaGa4S7 wurde zum ersten Mal in einem optischen parametrischen Femtosekundenverstärker bei 100 kHz Folgefrequenz eingesetzt, der von einem Weißlichtkontinuum geseedet und von einem Yb-basierten Lasersystem bei 1028 nm gepumpt wurde. Phasenstabile sub-4-Zyklen Impulse wurden direkt bei 10 µm erzeugt, wobei von den herausragenden dispersiven Eigenschaften dieses nichtlinearen Kristalls für diesen parametrischen Prozess profitiert wurde. Um eine hohe Einzelimpulsenergie im Nanosekundenbereich zu erreichen, wurde ein origineller kaskadierter optisch-parametrischer Oszillator mit Intracavity-Pumpen der zweiten Stufe verwendet. Dieser basierte auf einem Nd-Lasersystem bei 1 µm Wellenlänge und 100 Hz Folgefrequenz. Maximale Energien über 1 mJ bei einer Impulsdauer von 10 ns wurden in einem Abstimmbereich von 6.62 bis 11.34 µm erzielt. Schmalbandiger Laserbetrieb wurde durch Typ- 2-Phasenanpassung und ein Volumen-Bragg-Gitter erreicht. Die vielfältige Publikation der Ergebnisse im Projekt trug wesentlich dazu bei, die Sichtbarkeit dieser neuen Klasse von Nichtoxidkristallen für deren Anwendung in der nichtlinearen Frequenzkonversion im mid-IR zu erhöhen. Die untersuchten neuartigen Kristalle sind im Wesentlichen frei von den technologischen Problemen mit denen die bekannten Chalkopyriten behaftet sind, wie chemische Instabilität und das Erfordernis des Temperns nach dem Wachstum. Damit sind diese Kristalle attraktiv für eine zukünftige Kommerzialisierung.
