EXC 243:  Formation of Normative Orders

Subject Area History
Term from 2007 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 39215448

Project Description

The cluster of excellence examines current conflicts over a just world order from the perspective of a range of disciplines with a thematic focus on the formation of normative orders. In contrast to functionalist approaches, which refer to factors external to norms, the cluster of excellence will deal with internal perspectives, processes and conflicts. Normative orders are defined as "orders of justification", which serve to justify claims to validity, authority and specific distributions of goods. Such orders are embedded in justification models and narratives that arise in historical constellations and are generally handed down, modified and institutionalised over long periods of time. However, every traditional justification narrative overshoots extant orders and thereby offers opportunities for criticism, rejection or resistance.
The researchers participating in the cluster of excellence will find common ground in this internal discursive standpoint from which they can investigate the formation of normative orders. Involved are participants from the fields of philosophy, history, political science, law, anthropology, economics, theology and sociology. Speakers of the cluster of excellence are Prof. Klaus Guenther and Prof. Rainer Forst.
