Within the framework of the LIS "Digitization of Archival Sources" program, the Municipal Archives Ulm wants to digitize its most important collections of charters and to make the digitized material available on the Internet. The charters of the Chancellery of the Imperial City of Ulm and the charters of the patrician families of Ulm form Ulm's most important archival holdings from the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period. Ulm was the most important imperial city in Swabia and acted as the head of the Swabian town league, as well as the central meeting place of the Swabian Confederation and the Swabian Imperial Circle. Therefore, the charters collections of Ulm are of high importance for the history of the entire German Southwest. These collections include the charters of the patrician families of Ulm, who, during the entire empire, occupied the highest offices of the city and of the city leagues. These families were widespread throughout the entire Southern part of the empire. The patricians of Ulm were related or intermarried with those in other imperial cities such as Nuremberg, Augsburg, Regensburg or Strasbourg. The abundance of political, social, cultural, economic, construction and everyday history references make these documents invaluable for historic research.
