Silesian between Polish and German, between autochthonous dialects and Polish standard. Sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic aspects of a twofold linguistic hybridization

Final Report Abstract

The project focussed on Silesian, one of the few vital autochthonous language varieties on the territory of Poland. Silesian is characterised by the fact that it is also an urban variety that is used alongside Polish in the Upper Silesian industrial area, one of the most densely populated areas in Europe. Silesian is historically characterised by contact with German, currently with Standard Polish. The historical language contact with German has left its mark on the lexis and (morpho-)syntax of Silesian. Empirically, the actual use of Silesian, in particular the variation between Silesian features and standard Polish features in the spontaneous, informal speech of Silesian speakers, has hardly been investigated so far. This was the aim of the project. Characteristics that are attributed to contact with German were considered centrally, but not exclusively. The central approach of the project was to carry out corpus linguistic and psycholinguistic analyses of linguistic variation. As part of the project, a corpus of 285.000 word forms of spoken Silesian was created, which will be accessible for scientific research after a test phase and will be expanded to include further data collected. The planned psycholinguistic experiments dealt with the processing of morphosyntactic and lexical variation. They could only be carried out at the end of the project and have not yet been analysed. Results are available on variation in the areas of lexis, morphosyntax and inflectional morphology. They show a clear influence of Standard Polish on Silesian, but at the same time (with exceptions) a clear presence of Silesian features, which in part varies according to the age of the speakers, but in part also remains stable across generations.
