Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

The project ‘Formation mechanisms of low-magnesium calcite and associated barite at cold seeps in today’s aragonite sea’ was aiming to constrain the formation of low-Mg calcite (LMC) and barite that had been reported and sampled from modern seeps of the Gulf of Mexico. The application of a comprehensive set of methods of low-temperature geochemistry allowed us to identify criteria to recognize primary LMC (i.e., LMC resulting from precipitation) and to discriminate such primary LMC from LMC resulting from the recrystallization of high-Mg calcite (HMC) and aragonite. The obtained knowledge will help to recognize primary LMC in the rock record – particularly when found in association with barite – and to constrain the compositions of seepage fluids in the geological past. In particular, our findings will help to recognize former brine seepage, fostering the identification of the factors that governed the early evolution of chemosynthesis-based ecosystems at seeps in the Paleozoic.
