Function of the Hsp70 homolog Ssb in the maintenance of cellular energy homeostasis (P10)

The highly conserved AMP-activated kinase (AMPK) plays a pivotal role for the cellular energy homeostasis of eukaryotic cells. We found that the heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70)-homolog Ssb and the 14-3-3 protein Bmh1 are involved in regulating the activity of the yeast AMPK homolog SNF1. We will investigate the functional and physical interplay between Ssb, Bmh1, and the components of the SNF1 signaling network at a mechanistic level. The results of the study shall help to better understand the regulation of SNF1/AMPK, which is an important drug target for the treatment of diabetes type 2 and cancer.
