Modelling of material injection processes into porous structures applied to vertebroplasty (C03)

Subject Area Mechanics
Applied Mechanics, Statics and Dynamics
Term since 2018
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 327154368

Vertebroplasty is a medical procedure used for treating fractured vertebrae by injecting bone cement into it. The aim of the project is to simulate the procedure using a multiphase continuum-mechanical model based on the Theory of Porous Media. The main challenges are related to modelling interfacial effects at the pore scale, curing and the non-Newtonian rheology of the bone cement, to the effects of heat released from the curing, and to the uncertainties in the patient-specific material parameters. Such a clinically relevant model would be a useful tool for practitioners to optimise the procedure patient-specific and to eliminate associated risks like cement leakage.
